What is this feature?
True to its name — "embed" — Embedded Data is an identifier value hidden within your survey.
Why is it needed?
1. No need to collect it again in every survey
You can pull Embedded Data in as a variable to break down responses or compare them across groups, enabling richer, more sophisticated analysis without adding more questions to your survey.
2. Fewer unnecessary questions, more engaged respondents
You can show different questions depending on a respondent's attributes or situation. You can also use their previous response history to display messages tailored to the moment, such as "Welcome back — thanks for joining us again!"
When do you need it?
1️⃣ URL parameter
When you're distributing a survey across multiple channels and want to compare responses by channel
"We sent the same survey to both Instagram and email, but looking at the results alone, we can't tell which channel got a better response. Creating a separate survey for each channel just means more work combining the results later."
🧙 Here's how to use it
Add a tag like "channel=instagram" or "channel=email" to the end of each channel's survey URL before distributing it, and the channel a respondent came from is automatically saved with their response data.
You only need to create one survey, and can later split the results by channel to instantly compare which channel performed better.
2️⃣ My Panel profile
When you don't want to ask the same information again in a recurring survey
"We run a satisfaction survey every quarter, and we keep asking for information we already know, like membership tier or tenure. Respondents find it tedious to answer the same questions every time."
🧙 Here's how to use it
Register member information in My Panel profile ahead of time, and that information is automatically saved with the response data every time you send a survey.
You won't ask for information you already have, so respondents can focus only on the questions that really matter.
3️⃣ Other survey responses
When you want to reuse an answer from a pre-survey in the main survey
"In our pre-survey, we asked respondents to pick a product they're interested in, and in the main survey we only want to ask about that product in detail. But we can't ask respondents to re-enter their pre-survey answer in the main survey."
🧙 Here's how to use it
Bring the answer from the pre-survey into this survey as Embedded Data.
Set up the main survey to show different questions depending on the imported answer, and only the questions related to the product chosen in the pre-survey appear automatically.
4️⃣ Custom
When you send the same survey multiple times to different audiences, and part of the questions need to change each time
"We evaluate the same product every week for 6 weeks, and the questions we need to ask change slightly week to week. Before every send, we manually show and hide questions — it's tedious and easy to get wrong."
🧙 Here's how to use it
Create a custom Embedded Data named "Week" with sub-values "Week 1" and "Week 2."
Set up question logic so the Week 1 question only shows to people whose Week value is "Week 1," and the Week 2 question only to people whose Week value is "Week 2."
Link the "Week 1" collection group to the "Week 1" value, and the "Week 2" collection group to the "Week 2" value. Then, even though it's a single survey, respondents who enter through each collection group's link automatically see only the questions for their week.
5️⃣ Other (language)
When you want to show the same survey in each respondent's own language, across multiple countries
"We need to send a survey at the same time to respondents in the US, Japan, and Korea, but creating a separate survey for each country makes managing all the translated questions a real hassle."
🧙 Here's how to use it
Add a translated language to your survey, and that language is automatically created as Embedded Data.
Assign the language each collection group should show and send the survey, and even though it's a single survey, each respondent sees it in their own language.
