What is a short answer question?
It is a question where respondents answer by directly typing text. It can be used when you want to gather free opinions or specific reasons.
Creating Short Answer Questions
1️⃣ Question
This is the area to enter the question text to be shown to respondents.
You can adjust the font size or style using the formatting editor, and enhance the survey's readability by inserting links, tables, images, or videos.
💡 Usage tip | It doesn't necessarily have to be in the form of a 'question.' You can enter instructions that respondents must check into the question field and prompt them to type "Yes, I have confirmed" in the input field to sufficiently guide important details before starting the survey.
2️⃣ Respondent Input Field
This is the area where respondents directly enter their answers to the question.
In short answer questions, you can select one of the following response options to match the purpose of the question: Long Text, Short Text, Multiple Text, Number, or Date.
✅ Long Text
This is the default option set when you create a short answer question. It can be used when you want to receive a respondent's thoughts or experiences freely and in sufficient length, allowing up to 500 characters.
🧙 Try using it in these cases:
"Please feel free to write about your experience using the service."
"If there is anything you felt needed improvement, please describe it in detail."
✅ Short Text
This option is used for receiving short and simple answers. You can enter a number up to 50 characters in the 'Input Range.'
🧙 Try using it in these cases:
"Please enter the brand name you use most frequently."
"Please write the model name of the device you are currently using."
✅ Multiple Text
This can be used when you want to receive multiple short answer responses within a single question. You can set the number of short answer responses the respondent will enter in the 'Number of Input Fields,' and the character limit for each field can be adjusted from 1 to 50 in the settings on the right.
🧙 Try using it in these cases:
"Please enter up to 3 apps you use frequently."
"Please write 2 to 3 brand names that are memorable to you."
✅ Number
This option is suitable for cases where input must be numeric only, such as amount, quantity, or period. You can set the minimum and maximum values in the 'Input Range' and freely set units (e.g., USD, items, months).
💡 Usage tip | By using the reference feature next to the minimum/maximum values of the 'Input Range,' you can set the minimum or maximum value based on a number entered by the respondent in another question. However, this is only available if the referenced question is also a short answer question with the response option set to 'Number.'
🧙 Try using it in these cases:
"Please enter your average monthly spending."
"Please enter the period (number of months) you have used the service."
✅ Date
This option can be used when a response regarding a specific date is needed. Respondents can select a date from a calendar format, reducing their input burden.
🧙 Try using it in these cases:
"Please select the date of your recent visit."
"Please enter the date you signed up for the service."
💡 Usage tip | Personal information such as date of birth must be collected using 'Personal Information Questions.'
💡 These features are also available for short answer questions.
Various features can be accessed from the settings on the right of the short answer question.
Character limit: You can further set a minimum and maximum character count within the default range of each response option (not available for Number or Date types).
Restrict response pasting: A feature that allows you to prevent respondents from pasting content copied from elsewhere. When enabled, a message saying "Text pasting is not allowed for this question" will appear if a respondent attempts to paste.
Attribute display logic: A feature that allows you to show or hide some items only to respondents who satisfy specific conditions. You can present only necessary items based on previous responses. In short answer questions, this is only available for the 'Multiple Text' type.
Question display logic: You can set the question to be visible only to respondents who meet the set conditions.
Skip logic: You can set which question to move to after answering the question according to the conditions.
Minimum display time: You can set the minimum number of seconds the question will be exposed on the respondent's screen.
Required response: This option sets the question as mandatory, so the respondent must answer it to move to the next.
