Variable Management (Edit · Hide)

Learn in detail how to hide, reorder, copy, and edit variables. Set up variables freely in a format optimized for the Analytics screen and manage your data more conveniently.

📌 Hiding or editing variables is available on all plans.

1️⃣ Hiding / Showing Variables

Use this feature when you want to exclude variables you won't be using in analysis. When a variable is hidden, it no longer appears on analytics screens such as the Results tab and Cross-tab tab.

💡 Usage tip | The variable hide feature is only available to the person in charge of the project the data belongs to. The hide button and hidden variables are not visible to collaborators.

step 1. In [Analytics > Variables > Variable list], select the variable(s) you want to hide. You can select multiple variables, or select all using the checkbox at the top.

step 2. Click the [Hide] button in the settings bar on the upper left. Hidden variables are displayed as 'Hidden' in the 'Status' column of the variable list and are excluded from analytics data. They will also no longer appear in the card area of the Results tab.

step 3. If you want to use a hidden variable again, select it from the variable list and click the [Show] button to restore it.

2️⃣ Reordering Variables

Changing the order of variables also changes the order in which they appear on analytics screens such as the Results tab. This is useful when organizing variables after copying or creating new ones to place them in your desired position.

✅ Reordering by drag and drop

Click and hold the variable you want to move, then drag and drop it to the desired position to change the order.

💡 Usage tip | The drag and drop method can only be used when a single filter — one of survey questions, profile, metadata, or parameters — is selected.

✅ Reordering with [Reorder]

step 1. Select the variable(s) whose order you want to change, then click the [Reorder] button in the upper left.

step 2. On the reorder screen, select the reference variable and specify whether to move the variable to 'After' or 'Before' the reference.

  • After: Moves to after the reference variable.

  • Before: Moves to before the reference variable.

step 3. Once applied, you can confirm the updated order in the variable list.

3️⃣ Copying Variables

You can copy an existing variable from the variable list to create a new variable.

step 1. Select the variable you want to copy, then click the [Copy] button in the upper left.

step 2. When the selected variable is copied, a new variable is created with 'N' added at the beginning of the variable name. The newly created variable is added at the bottom of the variable list. (Example: Copying Q1 creates a variable named NQ1.)

4️⃣ Editing Variables Directly

You can directly edit the name, type, label, and value of individual variables in the variable list table. Hovering over the cell you want to edit reveals a pencil icon — click it to edit immediately.

💡 Usage tip | Variable editing is only available for data imported via file import, variable import, or variable copy. Variables from surveys where responses were collected directly in Dataspace cannot be edited.

✅ Editing the name

The variable name is an identifier for distinguishing each variable during data analysis. The default is automatically generated as Q1, Q2, Q3, etc., and can be freely changed to a more analysis-friendly name using English letters, numbers, and special characters (_, -, ., (), ~, {}, [], +).

✅ Editing the type

You can edit the variable type if it was incorrectly selected or needs to be changed. However, the range of changes available may be limited depending on the variable type.

✅ Editing the label

The label refers to the question content of a survey variable. You can change the long question text presented to respondents into a shorter keyword or expression that is easier to use in analysis.

✅ Editing value labels (value labeling)

The value refers to the field where the choice data included in a survey variable is stored. You can edit the choices written for respondents' understanding into a format that is easier to use in analysis.

Each choice can be edited one by one, or you can copy (Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the value list to edit everything at once.

You can also click the [Reset] button before saving to revert to the state before editing.

5️⃣ Bulk-editing Variables by Uploading a Labeling File

Bulk variable editing is a method of modifying name, label, and value data according to the file format provided in the Variables tab and uploading it. For a detailed explanation of how to edit variables, please refer to the article below.

💡 Usage tip | Bulk editing of names and labels is only available for data imported via file import, variable import, or variable copy. Bulk editing of names and labels is not available for variables from surveys where responses were collected directly in Dataspace.

step 1. From the upper right of the variable list screen, click [Edit labeling file > Download] to download a file containing the current variable data.

step 2. Open the downloaded file and edit the content of the following 3 columns.

step 3. After saving the edited file, upload it via [Edit labeling file > Upload] and it will be immediately reflected in the variable list.
