What Is Combination?

Combination is a feature used when combining two or more variables to create a new variable. For example, you can combine the response results from a variable asking about household composition, a variable asking about presence of children, and a variable asking about marital status to create a single integrated variable that can identify comprehensive life stages such as 'married households with 3 or more members and children.'

When Do You Need Variable Combination?

✅ When you want to consolidate multiple demographic data points into a single customer type

"Marital status, presence of children, and number of household members are all separate, making it difficult to analyze. Is there a way to group them under a single criterion? 🤔"

🧙 Here's how you can use it

Using the combination feature, you can consolidate multiple demographic variables into a single variable to create a new customer type.

For example, if you have variables for marital status, presence of children, and number of household members, you can combine the three variables to create segments such as 'single-person household / newlyweds / household with children and 3 or more members.'

Using the variable created this way as an analysis criterion makes it easier to understand consumption patterns or differences in service usage by household type.

✅ When you want to combine customer behavior data to create customer segments

"Purchase amount and purchase frequency are separate, making it hard to view customer types at a glance. 🤔"

🧙 Here's how you can use it

Combining purchase-related variables lets you create a new variable that classifies customers by behavioral pattern.

For example, if you have variables for purchase frequency and purchase amount, you can combine the two to create a customer segment variable such as 'high frequency · high amount customers / high frequency · low amount customers / low frequency customers.'

This segmentation makes it easy to identify core customers, customers requiring attention, and potential customers, which helps when developing marketing strategies.

How to Combine Variables

📌 The create variable feature is available on the Professional or Enterprise plan.

1️⃣ Select variables on the Combination screen.

step 1. Click [Variables] at the top of the Analytics screen, then select [Create variable > Combination] from the left menu.

step 2. Enter the [New variable name] and [New variable label] for the variable to be newly created through combination, then select either 'Single choice' or 'Multiple choice' as the variable type.

✅ New variable name: Enter the name of the variable to be created. Variable names can use English letters, numbers, and some special characters (_, -, ., (), ~, {}, [], +).

✅ New variable label: Enter the label for the variable to be created. It is a good idea to write a name that clearly conveys the meaning of the combined data. (Example) If you combined respondents where gender is 'Female' and age is 'in their 20s' → "Women in their 20s"

✅ New variable type

  • Single choice: Select this when creating a variable where each response corresponds to only one value. Suitable for distinguishing respondents into non-overlapping groups, such as 'single unmarried household' or 'married with children.'

  • Multiple choice: Select this when creating a variable where a single response can correspond to multiple values simultaneously. Used when a respondent can be included in multiple conditions at once — for example, an 'iPhone user' can also be included in the 'premium brand preference' group.

2️⃣ Enter values.

step 1. Enter the value label for the combination. The value label becomes the name of the response group in the newly created variable.

step 2. Select the variable to combine, then select whether to 'Include' or 'Exclude' responses from that variable, and specify the response values to use in the combination.

💡 Usage tip | If the variable selected for combination is a ranking type, checking 'Include only 1st rank selection' in the value selection area lets you include only the value selected as 1st rank by respondents in the condition.

step 3. If needed, click [+ Add condition set] to add multiple conditions to a single value.

step 4. Click the [+ Add value] button to continue adding new values to combine.

💡 Usage tip | After setting all value conditions, clicking [Refresh response count] lets you immediately check the response count corresponding to the current conditions. This lets you verify in advance that the conditions are set appropriately.

💡 Usage tip | If you already have a list of value labels to use in the new variable, you can copy (Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) that list in [Bulk edit value labels] to enter everything at once. However, before pasting, first click the [+ Add value] button the same number of times as the labels you want to edit to create the input fields. This makes it convenient to edit multiple labels at once.

3️⃣ Create the new variable.

step 1. Once you've added two or more values to complete the variable combination settings, click [Create variable] in the upper right.

step 2. Check the settings in the 'New variable preview' screen, then click [Done].

step 3. The newly combined variable can be viewed in the 'Variable list' and in the 'Results tab,' 'Cross-tab tab,' and 'Report tab' of Analytics.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. It says a single-choice variable cannot be created due to responses with duplicate values, and variable creation is not working.

A. If a single response among the selected conditions corresponds to multiple values simultaneously, a single-choice variable cannot be created. In this case, change the new variable type to 'Multiple choice' and proceed with variable creation.
