📌 Pipe-in choices is available on all plans.
What is Pipe-in choices?
Pipe-in choices is a feature in multiple-choice questions that automatically brings in the choices a respondent selected or did not select in a previous question to configure the choices for the next question.
This allows you to design surveys where the next question follows naturally based on the respondent's previous selection, and to configure a question flow tailored to the respondent's situation.
Why should you use Pipe-in choices?
1️⃣ Create a more natural survey flow reflecting respondent's choices
If you repeatedly show the same choices to all respondents, choices already selected or not applicable may be exposed again, which can cause confusion.
By using Pipe-in choices, you can reduce unnecessary choices and lower the response burden, encouraging more focused responses.
2️⃣ Collect accurate and highly usable data
Since Pipe-in choices configures the next question based on the respondent's actual selection results, it effectively reduces logically inconsistent responses or selection errors.
As a result, the burden of data post-processing or cleaning is reduced, and you can more stably collect highly reliable data that can be used immediately for analysis.
When is Pipe-in choices needed?
✅ Understanding Brand Funnel Stages
“I want to naturally follow up by asking which brands they have actually used among the brands they recognize,
and which brand they used most recently among those. 🤔”
🧙 You can use it like this:
When you need to ask questions step-by-step, such as Brand Awareness → Brand Experience → Recent Experience, you can bring only the brands selected in the previous question to the next question's choices and gradually narrow down the options.
Since only brands actually applicable to the respondent are presented, unnecessary choices can be removed, and logically consistent responses can be induced to collect more reliable brand funnel data.
How to Set Pipe-in choices
📌 Pipe-in choices can only be used in multiple-choice questions and cannot be applied to other question types.
✅ When you want to present choices selected in the previous question
If you want to ask questions step-by-step, such as 'Which items among several do you know?' and 'Which of those have you actually used or experienced?', set up Pipe-in choices in the following order.
step 1. Select the question where you want to show only the choices the respondent selected in the previous question.
step 2. Click the [Pipe-in choices] icon at the top of the question.
step 3. The piping question is added immediately after the reference question. Enter the question for the next question, and in the Pipe-in choices area displayed at the bottom of the question, set the option to ‘Present choices selected in the previous question’. Then, only the choices the respondent selected in the previous question will appear in the piping question.
💡 Usage tip | If you add, delete, or hide choices in the reference question, the changes are automatically reflected in the connected connected question.
💡 Usage tip | If you set choice order randomization in the reference question, the same setting is applied to the connected connected question.
✅ When you want to present choices not selected in the previous question
Pipe-in choices can also be used when you want to ask which item is most preferred among several, and then follow up with questions about the ‘reason for not preferring’ or ‘points needing improvement’ for the rest except that item.
step 1. Select the question where you want to show only the choices the respondent did not select in the previous question.
step 2. Click the [Pipe-in choices] icon at the top of the question.
step 3. The piping question is added immediately after the reference question. Enter the question for the next question, and in the Pipe-in choices area displayed at the bottom of the question, set the option to ‘Not selected’. Then, only the choices the respondent did not select in the previous question will appear in the piping question.
💡 Usage tip | If you add, delete, or hide choices in the reference question, the changes are automatically reflected in the connected connected question.
💡 Usage tip | If you set choice order randomization in the reference question, the same setting is applied to the connected connected question.
🧙 Is a ‘None’ choice added to the previous question?
It is important to set Pipe-in choices by considering various response scenarios in advance.
For example, if you are showing choices selected in the previous question in the next question, you must also consider how to handle respondents who selected the [None] choice in the previous question.
In this case, you can design it so that respondents who selected [None] in Q1 do not move to Q2, or by adding a choice like [Not Applicable] to Q2 to provide an item the respondent can select.
💡 These features are also available in the Dataspace edit tab.
If you want to check if the set feature has been applied correctly, use the [Preview] feature at the top right.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q. How is the question type of Pipe-in choices determined?
A. When a Pipe-in choices question is first created, it follows the type of the reference question.
For example, if the reference question is a multiple-choice multiple-selection type, the piping question is also created as a multiple-choice multiple-selection type.
After the Pipe-in choices question is created, you can freely change the question type as needed (e.g., Multiple Choice Multiple Selection → Multiple Choice Rank Selection).
