📌 The order randomization feature is available on all plans.
What is Choice Order Randomization?
Choice order randomization is a feature that displays the choices in a survey question in a different order each time a respondent answers.
Why use choice order randomization?
1️⃣ Minimize response bias by reducing order effects
In multiple choice questions, the order in which choices are presented can affect response tendencies. For example, choices placed earlier may be selected more frequently, or the last choice seen may be better remembered and selected — these are "order effects."
To reduce this influence, Dataspace provides a choice order randomization feature that presents choices in a random order, helping you collect more balanced and reliable response data.
2️⃣ Preserve the intent and logical structure of questions
There may also be cases where the semantic relationship or logical flow between choices must be considered together. In such cases, you can group related choices and apply randomization at the group level.
This approach lets you maintain the core intent of the question while effectively reducing order-based response bias, enabling more robust survey design.
How to Randomize Choice Order
📌 Choice order randomization applies only to choices in regular questions, not screening questions.
🔀 Individual Choice Randomization
Randomly sorts all individual choices in a question.
Step 1. Select the desired question and enable the 'Randomize Choice Order' toggle in the settings on the right.
Step 2. Once the toggle is enabled, 'Individual Choice Randomization' will show as ON, and the question will display a 'Choice Randomization' mark.
🔀 Group-based Choice Randomization
Designates related choices into groups and randomly sorts the order between or within groups.
Step 1. Select the desired question and enable the 'Randomize Choice Order' toggle in the settings on the right.
Step 2. Select 'Group-based Choice Randomization.' Choose the choices to group and click [Add] to create a group.
💡 Tip | To remove a group assignment, use [Reset Group Assignment].
💡 Tip | Non-consecutive choices cannot be grouped.
Example: Grouping Choice 3 and Choice 5 → Not possible
Example: Grouping Choices 3, 4, and 5 → Possible
Step 3. Created groups appear in the list below. Configure randomization as desired:
Randomize choice order within group: Enable the toggle to the right of the group to randomly sort choices within the group.
Randomize order between groups: Enable the [Randomize Order Between Groups] toggle at the bottom to randomly sort the presentation order between groups.
Both options can be enabled simultaneously, in which case both the order between groups and the choices within each group are presented randomly.
💡 Tip | To turn off randomization, disable the choice order randomization toggle in the settings screen. You can adjust settings at any time.
Step 4. Once configured, 'Group-based Choice Randomization' will show as ON in the settings on the right, and the question will display a 'Choice Randomization' mark.
💡 Preview feature
To verify that randomization is applied correctly, use the [Preview] button in the top right corner. Each time you run a preview, choices or questions are presented in a random order, letting you see the survey flow as respondents will experience it.
FAQ
Q. Can I manually specify the order of randomized choices, or check what order was shown to each respondent?
A. Randomization is applied automatically by the system's internal logic. Users cannot specify the order or ratio of display, nor can they look up the exact order in which choices were presented to individual respondents.
Please note that randomization is designed to reduce order-based response bias.
