What is a Rating scale question?
It is a question that evaluates the degree of satisfaction or agreement using a score or scale. It is frequently used in satisfaction surveys because responses can be compared using the same criteria.
Creating Rating scale Questions
1️⃣ Question
This is the area to enter the question text to be shown to respondents.
You can adjust the font size or style using the formatting editor, and enhance the survey's readability by inserting links, tables, images, or videos.
2️⃣ Rating Score
'Rating Score' is the area where respondents evaluate the question with a score. Rating scale questions are set to 5 points by default, and you can freely adjust them from 3 to 10 points at the top of the question.
You can enter guiding text corresponding to Negative / Neutral / Positive for each score.
[Dissatisfied – Neutral – Satisfied]
[Not at all – Neutral – Very much so]
[Strongly disagree – Neither – Strongly agree]
However, in cases where there are many rating scores, such as 4, 6, or 8–10 points, it is difficult to enter text for every step, so text can only be entered for the highest and lowest scores.
💡 Usage tip | In Rating scale questions, it is important to maintain the criteria once set until the end. For example, if you are surveying satisfaction with 5 points, you should not change to another criterion in the middle so that comparative analysis with previous responses is possible. If you are unsure which criteria to use, refer to the 5 things you must know when composing customer satisfaction survey questions for the first time guide.
3️⃣ Rating Score Arrangement
Rating scores can be displayed to respondents in a horizontal or vertical arrangement. Please select the appropriate arrangement at the top of the question based on the nature of the question and the length of the text.
✅ Horizontal Arrangement
This works well when the text is short and simple. Since Rating scale questions are usually evaluated by scores or steps, it is recommended to place them in the order of Negative → Positive from left to right.
🧙 Try using it in these cases:
When you want to quickly ask about overall satisfaction with the service (e.g., Dissatisfied / Neutral / Satisfied)
Questions where respondents can intuitively select by looking only at the score or step (e.g., 1–5 point satisfaction evaluation)
✅ Vertical Arrangement
This is suitable when the text is long or when you want to convey the meaning of each score more clearly. Like the horizontal arrangement, it is better to align them in the order of Negative → Positive from top to bottom.
🧙 Try using it in these cases:
Questions where the meaning or criteria must be explained for each score (e.g., cases where advance guidance on what 'Satisfied' means is needed)
When you want to collect respondents' experiences or perceptions by subdividing them more finely (e.g., cases where you want to distinguish subtle differences such as depth of service experience, degree of satisfaction, or level of trust in a brand)
When you need to enter explanation text for all scores.
※ While horizontal arrangement allows adding explanations only to some benchmark scores, vertical arrangement allows entering content for every single score.
💡 These features are also available for Rating scale questions.
Various features can be accessed from the settings on the right of the Rating scale question.
Question display logic: You can set the question to be visible only to respondents who meet the set conditions.
Skip logic: You can set which question to move to after answering the question according to the conditions.
Minimum display time: You can set the minimum number of seconds the question will be exposed on the respondent's screen.
Required response: This option sets the question as mandatory, so the respondent must answer it to move to the next.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q. I am using a 5-point scale, and I want to enter explanations for 2 and 4 points as well.
A. This is possible if you set the arrangement to vertical. In the vertical arrangement, you can enter individual explanation text for every score (scale).
