Creating a Survey in Multiple Languages and Checking Response Results

This guide walks you through the entire process: adding languages to a survey, collecting responses by language, and checking the results.

Before you start

Standard language

Added language

The original language of the survey

The language you want to translate into

The language you used to write the survey in the Edit tab

The language shown to respondents that needs to be translated

1️⃣ Select the language to add

[Edit] page > [Language] tab > Check [Standard language] > Click the [+ Add language] button

From the Edit page, go to the survey's Language tab, check that the standard language is set correctly, then select the language you want to translate into.

💡 Tip | You can use the note field to distinguish the same language for different purposes, such as "For Country A."

2️⃣ Choose a translation method

Pick whichever of the three methods is most convenient.

Direct input

AI Translation

File import

Translate questions and choices one by one on the translation page.

AI automatically translates all questions.

Import your translations using the specified Excel format.

When you click an added language, a screen appears with the source text in the standard language on the left and a field to enter your translation on the right. Proceed with translation using whichever method suits your situation.

✅ Direct input

Enter translations for questions and choices one by one directly in the translation input field on the right.

✅ AI Translation

Click the [AI Survey Translation] button to translate all questions at once.

💡 Tip | If any cells are left untranslated, select [AI Survey Translation] > [Translate only questions with empty cells] to fill them in.

✅ File import

Click the [File Export / Import] button at the top to download the translation file (Excel). Enter your translations in the file, then import it again to apply them.

💡 Tip | Use the preview to check the translation results as they'll appear on the respondent's screen.

3️⃣ Set up your collection group

In the Collect tab's [Language selection settings for respondents], you can choose whether to fix the survey to a single language or let respondents choose their preferred language.

✅ When you need to send a pre-assigned language to respondent lists split by country

Example: I have separate panel/customer lists secured for the US, Japan, and Thailand, each with different target response counts and links to manage separately, so I'm creating three collection groups.

→ For a simultaneous study in the US, China, and Thailand, set each collection group to display only the native language.

✅ When you want to let respondents choose their preferred language themselves

Example: This is a survey targeting foreign residents in Korea, and I'm worried the response rate will be low since each respondent is comfortable with a different language.

→ Offer an option to choose from German, Russian, or Vietnamese.

4️⃣ Collect responses

Once you start collecting, respondents will take the survey in the configured language (or the language they select).

📌 The standard language cannot be changed after collection has started. Be sure to finalize it before you start collecting.

5️⃣ Check response results by language

A survey run with multiple languages added is automatically compiled into a single set of results, regardless of language.

You can apply a language filter to view responses in just the language you want, or compare them broken down by language. The language filter is also available in the Crosstab, Slides, Variables, and Response tabs.

💡 Tip | The language filter is also available when sharing results via a public link.

📌 The language filter in the Results tab only changes the language of questions and choices. Open-ended responses entered directly by respondents are still shown in their original language.
