What Is Formula?
Formula is a feature for creating new variables from response data made up of numbers — such as numeric and rating types — using arithmetic operations (+, -, *, /) or functions (sum, min, max, mean, etc.).
For example, if the amount spent on groceries was collected as a numeric response in units like '10,000 won, 20,000 won,' you can use a formula to create a new variable converted to actual amounts like '1 → 10,000 won.' This conversion makes the data easier to use intuitively in subsequent analysis or report writing.
Additionally, variables with multiple selectable values — such as multiple choice or ranking types — can also be processed with formulas. For example, using the count function lets you calculate the number of items selected by a respondent and convert it into a numeric variable.
This also makes it possible to calculate the number of cosmetics used by each respondent based on results from a question like 'Please select all types of cosmetics you use,' and analyze metrics like how many cosmetics respondents use on average.
When Do You Need the Variable Formula?
✅ When you want to calculate multiple values or convert units to create new metrics
"I want to calculate the response data to use as new metrics like totals or averages. Or can I convert units to make analysis easier? 🤔"
🧙 Here's how you can use it
Using the formula feature, you can calculate response data or convert units to create new analysis criteria.
For example, you can convert expenditure data collected in units of 10,000 won into actual won amounts, or calculate the number of items selected by a respondent in a multiple-choice question to create a new numeric variable.
Using the variable created this way lets you create new metrics like average expenditure and average number of selections, making data easier to compare and analyze.
✅ When you want to sum scores from multiple questions into a single metric
"I asked about satisfaction with multiple questions — can I see overall satisfaction as a single score? 🤔"
🧙 Here's how you can use it
For example, if service satisfaction was surveyed with multiple questions like 'price satisfaction,' 'quality satisfaction,' and 'delivery satisfaction,' you can use the sum function in Formula to create an 'overall satisfaction score' variable by summing the scores from each question.
Using the overall score created this way lets you understand respondents' overall satisfaction at a glance, and makes it easier to compare which customer types or demographics have higher satisfaction.
How to Use Variable Formula
📌 The create variable feature is available on the Professional or Enterprise plan.
1️⃣ Select variables on the Formula screen.
step 1. Click [Variables] at the top of the Analytics screen, then select [Create variable > Formula] from the left menu.
step 2. Enter the [New variable name] and [New variable label] for the variable to be newly created using the formula. The variable type that can be created using a formula is 'Numeric,' and you can optionally set a unit, minimum, and maximum.
2️⃣ Enter values and create the new variable.
step 1. Set up your desired formula using arithmetic operations or functions.
✅ Arithmetic operations
You can create new variables using +, -, *, / operations. Select the target variable from the left dropdown, then enter arithmetic operations and constants in the right input box to calculate.
Also, clicking [+ Add variable] lets you add multiple variables and calculate using arithmetic operations between variables.
✅ Functions
You can create new variables using count, sum, mean, max, and min functions.
Select the function from the left dropdown, then select the target variable from the right dropdown to apply the calculation.
At this point, you can select all values of the variable, exclude specific values, or select specific values to use only the desired values in the calculation.
step 2. Once formula setup is complete, click [Create variable] in the upper right.
step 3. Check the settings in 'New variable preview,' then click [Done].
step 4. The created variable can be viewed in the 'Variable list' and can also be used in the 'Results tab,' 'Cross-tab tab,' and 'Report tab' of Analytics.
