What Is a Weight Setting?
Weight setting is a feature that adjusts the proportion of responses from specific groups to bring analysis results closer to actual market conditions when the composition of collected respondents differs from the actual market distribution (population).
For example, if respondents in their 20s are overrepresented compared to the actual market and those in their 40s are underrepresented, analyzing the data as-is may skew results toward the opinions of a specific age group.
Applying weights in this situation reduces the influence of overrepresented groups and compensates for underrepresented ones, allowing you to review more balanced analysis results.
When weights are applied, they are reflected in real time across all analytics screens in the service — including the Results tab, Cross-tab tab, and Report tab — and PPT auto-reports are also downloaded with the weights applied.
Why Should You Set Weights?
1️⃣ Get results that are closer to the actual market structure.
The composition of survey respondents can become skewed toward certain ages, genders, or regions during the research process. Applying weights corrects for these differences and brings analysis results closer to the actual population distribution of the market.
2️⃣ Conduct analysis without bias toward specific groups.
If a particular group is overrepresented among respondents, that group's opinions can have a disproportionate influence on the overall results. Setting weights reduces the influence of overrepresented groups and compensates for underrepresented ones, giving you more balanced analysis results.
How to Create Weights
1️⃣ Dataspace Professional plan users
📌 The weight setting feature is available on the Professional or Enterprise plan.
step 1. In the right sidebar of the Analytics screen, toggle 'Weight' to ON, then click [+ Add weight].
step 2. On the 'Create variable' screen, select the reference variable (e.g., age, gender, etc.), then enter the target proportions to create the weight.
step 3. In the right sidebar of the Analytics screen, toggle the [Weight] section to ON, then select the weight variable you created in advance from the dropdown menu.
step 4. As soon as you select the variable, the figures in the charts and tables are recalculated and displayed as weighted values (Weighted n).
2️⃣ Research expert service users (managed service)
If your survey was conducted through the research expert service, please contact your account manager.
