What Are Word Cloud and Morphological Analysis?
The word cloud is a feature that uses Opensurvey's algorithm to automatically extract and visualize words that appear frequently in responses.
This lets you see at a glance which words respondents mentioned most often, and the results can be viewed in various locations including the Results tab, Report tab, and Text AI tab.
Morphological analysis is an additional feature that can be applied to the word cloud. It extracts only nouns, verbs, and adjectives from response text to provide more refined keyword results.
By excluding particles, conjunctions, and other elements that don't significantly impact meaning, you can identify core keywords more clearly.
🧙 Understanding morphological analysis through an example
"When I looked at the responses, particles and conjunctions were mixed in heavily, making it hard to identify which words are important keywords. 🤔"
Applying morphological analysis in this situation extracts only meaningful words like 'good,' 'convenient,' 'service,' and 'price,' letting you more clearly identify the key keywords that were actually mentioned most in the responses.
💡 Usage tip | Word cloud and morphological analysis can be used freely without any text credit deduction.
Why Should You Use Morphological Analysis?
1️⃣ Automatically eliminate unnecessary words from analysis.
Words that don't significantly help with meaning analysis — like 'and,' 'but,' and 'very' — are automatically excluded. With this cleaned data, you can focus more on the keywords that are actually important in the responses.
2️⃣ Understand response content more multi-dimensionally by part of speech.
Since words are extracted by part of speech — nouns, verbs, adjectives, etc. — you can grasp the meaning of responses in a more structured way. For example, you can understand the context of responses by examining the subject (noun), action (verb), and feeling (adjective) together.
3️⃣ View the word cloud more clearly.
With fewer weak-meaning words and repeated expressions, the visualization becomes centered on key keywords. As a result, core words stand out more in the word cloud, and you can intuitively grasp the flow of the data.
How to View the Word Cloud
📌 Word cloud morphological analysis can be used without any text credit deduction.
step 1. Select the variable to analyze from the left sidebar of the Text AI tab.
step 2. Once a variable is selected, the word cloud for that variable is automatically displayed at the top of the screen. The displayed word cloud lets you see the most frequently mentioned keywords in the responses at a glance.
💡 Usage tip | You can save the word cloud as an image file using the download icon.
✅ Keywords
In the 'Keywords' section to the right of the word cloud, you can view the extracted keywords and the mention frequency of each keyword — up to a maximum of 80 — sorted in order of most-mentioned.
Copy: Click the copy icon in the upper right to copy all keywords at once and paste them directly into Excel or Google Sheets.
Hide / Show: Click the hide icon to the right of a specific keyword to hide it from the word cloud and keyword table. Hidden keywords can be shown again by clicking the show icon.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q. What are the criteria for extracting word cloud content?
A. The word cloud is automatically generated through Opensurvey's algorithm based on how often words are mentioned (mention frequency). Words are divided into 5 intervals using the mean and standard deviation of mention frequency, and font size and color are displayed differently according to each interval. Generally, words with higher mention frequency are displayed larger, while those with lower frequency are displayed smaller, and text color varies by interval for easy distinction.
Only words with 2 or more syllables are included as candidates for display in the word cloud. Additionally, a word cloud is generated when 5 or more words have been repeated 3 or more times; if the number of responses is too small or there aren't enough words meeting the conditions, a word cloud may not be generated.
Also, to prevent the word cloud from becoming overly complex, words mentioned in fewer than 3% of all responses are excluded from display.
Morphological Analysis
step 1. Activate the [Morphological analysis] toggle in the word cloud area.
step 2. Once analysis is complete, the word cloud and keyword table updated to show only nouns, verbs, and adjectives will be displayed. Analysis may take up to 2 minutes to complete.
💡 Usage tip | Setting [Morphological analysis] to OFF returns you to the pre-analysis word cloud, and clicking the [Re-analyze] button re-runs morphological analysis.
💡 Usage tip | After morphological analysis is complete, click the [Filter] button to select only the desired part of speech from nouns, verbs, and adjectives. Only keywords of the selected part of speech will be reflected in the word cloud and keyword table.
